Bond on the Web:
An Annotated Directory How many current websites, blogs, reviews and articles posted online are at least partially devoted to 007? It would be an impossible mission to find out. Some websites and blogs are certainly invaluable sources for information, some are fannish reviews for fun and entertainment, and many are commercial ventures selling everything from posters to CDs. Many, many more repeat the same information readily available elsewhere. There's also no lack of other lists of where to find Bond sites. But most, I've found, include dated information, haven't been updated in years, and many are of very specialized tastes. So below is an overview of many popular and obscure sites that might guide readers to those of most interest to them. This directory was compiled in late 2006, early 2007, so it's as up-to-date as possible. Please send news about Bond sites to me, Wesley Britton, for future updates. Note: With a few noteworthy exceptions, I didn't include commercial sites selling books, films, etc. I also avoided sites telling you how you can live like 007 or can play him in the interactive gaming world. There are other sources for such information – below, the emphasis is where to find interesting and useful information. James Bond 007 – CommanderBond.net Without question, CommanderBond should be the first site bookmarked by all 007 fans. With archives chockfull of in-depth articles, interviews, and sources for collectibles, CB is usually the first to post breaking news about books, films, games, and what's going on in the lives of former Bond actors. Very dynamic site with above-average discussion forums. On May 19th, 2006 it was announced Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Magazine was going to scale back their operations. The site was originally designed and developed by Panos Sambrakos in 1997. Over the years, MKKBB was edited by David Morefield, Deane Barker, James Rumley and Panos Sambrakos and became the official publication for the Ian Fleming Foundation. According to their May 19 announcement, the editors say other obligations have forced them to suspend adding new announcements and news although their extensive Bond archives will remain up for 007 enthusiasts. The editors noted that since the inception of MKKBB, there has been an explosion of sites devoted and related to Bond, and MKKBB served as a model for many. In fact, MKKBB set the bar very high for new sites wishing to be in the same league as this high-quality production. James Bond 007: The Home of James Bond (MI6) MI6 is an active, indispensable source for Bond news and intelligent, in-depth articles on all things 007. Includes much original content you can't find anywhere else. Her Majesty's Secret Servant: The Essential James Bond Her Majesty’s Secret Servant is a very rich resource for articles on Bond, spy films and TV shows, and is extremely authoritative with sections written by experts in all manner of areas. This isn't the place to go for fast-breaking news as the site has been in hiatus for some time with rumors of starting up again in the future. But, like MKKBB, it remains a place to check out for reliable information. James Bond 007 Magazine – For Bond Lovers Only! "From April 1979 until December 2005, 007 Magazine was a printed paper quarterly publication mailed to subscribers in over 40 countries worldwide; however, during 2006 the magazine evolved into a webzine, the first new-style 007 Magazine OnLine issue (#49) being published on August 1st 2006 in the ‘pay-to-view’ area of this website. "Each quarterly issue 007 Magazine OnLine contains definitive articles with photo-packed features, interviews, and many rare and never-before-published images relating to every conceivable aspect of the world of James Bond 007 – from Ian Fleming’s original classic novels into the longest running series of films in the history of movies, through to the James Bond ‘continuation authors’, and more, much more!" An invaluable resource, note this is a commercial site and some archives posted here are only available to subscribers. Well worth a look. Kimberly Last’s popular site includes international news stories, photos, event listings and news about merchandise and has the most extensive list of 007 websites on the net. It's a bit cumbersome as everything is listed by author names, so the emphasis of each site isn't noted. Still, a valuable resource. Put up by the James Bond Collector’s Club, this is one place to begin looking for tracking down new and rare Bond memorabilia. You can sign up for a subscription to this popular journal there. Speaking of collecting, Spy Guise Inc is the world's largest store for all things spy – and more – and often has exclusive and early deals for Bond cars, calendars, cards, CDs, and books. Some are very classy, autographed limited editions. All fans of 007 and film or TV spies should be on their mailing list. Damned Rodan's James Bond Soundtrack CD Index Excellent resource for a well-worn topic – the music of the films. Here's your best one-stop shop. Bondpix Photographic Services and James Bond Collectables Bondpix Freelance Photography is the place where you can find the most extensive catalogue of Bond images from behind-the-scenes work to publicity stills. The source for both private collectors and authors looking for pics for publications. Includes articles on film locations and interviews with stunt performers. BMT 216A: The James Bond Vehicle Library BMT 216: James Bond Vehicle Library is where to go if you're into 007 cars, boats, and planes. This is Matt Sherman's site full of articles on Bond events and news about Collector's Weekends hosted through his travel agency. At the forum, you can see copies of his BondList e-zine back to 2004, and subscribing to this list will keep you up-to-date on all sorts of 007 products. This one knocked me out: Bondian.com is a “reference work in progress,” providing information on more than 550 different books (spanning 2400+ editions and printings) and numerous articles related to James Bond 007 and his creator, British author Ian Fleming. The books range from essential references such as John Pearson’s The Life of Ian Fleming and Raymond Benson’s The James Bond Bedside Companion, to more unusual and esoteric titles such as Stuart R. Kaplan’s The James Bond Tarot Book and Patrick Leigh Fermor’s The Traveller’s Tree. Outstanding resource. Universal Exports: John McLusky's Original Bond Art A genuine nugget containing original comic art From the Strip Cartoon series originally published in the Daily Express that began in 1958. “James Bond 007 by John McLusky” was set up by his son, Graham, who provides family memories of “The Face of James Bond” that preceded – and perhaps influenced the choice of – Sean Connery. Highly recommended. Related sites: James Bond 007: Original Strip Cartoon Art Daily Express Daryl Burchmore's "From Eastbourne with Love" was a pleasant surprise. Daryl has amassed a vast archive of movie posters, props, books, toys – in fact, anything with a 007 association. “From Eastbourne With Love” became the first James Bond memorabilia exhibition to be based around one fan’s collection and to be authorized by MGM/UA, distributors of the movie series. You can learn about his exhibitions spiced with cool music and excellent visuals. James Bond 007 – Dr. Shatterhand's Botanical Garden Established in 1998, Stuart Basinger's "James Bond 007 – Dr. Shatterhand's Botanical Garden" is one of the cleverest sites I've seen. Best characteristic: Great original interviews with Bond actors and production staff. Keeps fresh with one of the best histories of Casino Royale anywhere. Scott Fennell's "James Bond Multimedia" has great articles on Bond cars, posters, and autographs. For bird watchers – “bird” in the British sense of the term – "007 Girls" claims to be "The only site which has every Bond girl in an easy to use format. With this site you can upload your own favourite Bond women pictures to the various galleries for other visitors to see." For further bird-watching, check out: James Bond Multimedia: Bond Girls BondMovies.com: The James Bond Movies The title says it all – mostly. Also includes articles on the real MI6 and related Bond intell. The site is still active and the webmaster does respond to questions. Oh-Oh-Seven Source: The Ultimate James Bond Website Jason Curtis created "Oh-Oh-Seven Source: The Ultimate James Bond Website", which is still going strong, with reports posted about Daniel Craig. James Bond, 007's Home – Universal Exports According to the "Universal Exports" homepage the site has been "on vacation" since 2005. However, they still have Forums up and provide news stories fed from CommanderBond.net – see description above. The James Bond Blog: Chronicling the Adventures of Ian Fleming's Super Spy Bruce Allen runs "The James Bond Blog – Chronicling the Adventures of Ian Fleming's Super Spy" where the postings are erratic. It's an unusual mix of plot summaries of books, most recently Moonraker, along with footnotes of interesting information about the chapter being discussed. I could find no contact information. Tomi Vaisala's Small James Bond Page I wrote Tomi Vaisala and asked what makes his "Small James Bond Page" distinctive. He replied, "There are lots of James Bond comics (e.g. Dark Horse Comics) but there is very little information about Finnish prints. So the distinguishing thing would be the incomplete list of Finnish James Bond comics." The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers The website for The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers includes articles on Raymond Benson's Bond books, The Wild Wild West, The Saint, Monk, and much more. Just click on the "Articles" link. A newer site that avoids repeating old information. Includes articles and numerous reviews of Casino Royale and earlier films. Deborah Lipp's quirky "Ultimate James Bond Fan Blog" is better than average, "the official blog of The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book, a never-before-compiled compendium of lists, facts" etc. Provides news and responds to questions in a timely manner. Some of the reviews are unusual, but still this one is worth tracking. "The Young Bond Dossier" is "Your Unofficial Source for News on the Literary James Bond and Beyond," mainly the Young Bond books coming out for young readers. The official site for this series is: Commanders Club of San Francisco: James Bond 007 The description for "Commanders Club of San Francisco: James Bond 007" was most intriguing. Apparently Bay Area fans got together to create a club to act out the high-life and talk about Bond. I wrote to find out more – my e-mail was returned. Licensed to Kill – The Ultimate James Bond Wiki According to Jamie Cattle, her new James Bond site is "The best James Bond Community on the web! On this site you can . . .
As this is the newest kid on the block, all bets are off for now. Jamie tells me, "James Bond Wiki is a ‘wiki’ site which means that is collaboratively authored by anyone. Unlike traditional message boards, James Bond fans can work together on the wiki site to create new pages, improve existing ones, and create their own navigation/structure. This collaborative experience goes beyond the traditional forums where comments and replies can get lost easily over time. Unlike a blog which reflects one person’s perspective, wikis are a collective perspective making them an ideal platform for a passionate community." According to the official website for the English borough of Swindon, "Ian Fleming lived in the Borough of Swindon in the small village of Sevenhampton, just five miles outside the town, where he owned the manor, Warneford Place for many years. He was also buried in the church there when he died in 1964." But Bond connections don't stop there. Two Bond films used Swindon for locations – A View to a Kill and The World is Not Enough. Stories about these shoots with photos are at the site. To add to the list, a series of Bond luminaries have appeared for interviews and signings in Swindon – the list to-date includes:
