The spy movie is a classic and a staple film genre. For decades now, we have been entertained and thrilled by their cunning and their guile. Directors have made their fame and fortune by these enthralling spy movies. What better place to have your spy film set in than a casino?!

James bond, Ocean’s 11, and so many more classic movies use casinos as their elaborate set pieces and backdrops for their heroic films. Every scene in them can offer such a vibrant and colorful color palette for your film. Not to mention the devious things that can happen inside the casino!

Setting the scene

The gambling industry has always been one of excitement and of peril, and there is no better place to set your spy movie in than that.

A casino is a classic set piece for a spy movie and absolutely a must have if you are pulling off a heist movie, or if you need a thrilling and gorgeous set piece for your movie. You can bring some casino thrills and glamour into your home with CasinosJungle.

We love to see our protagonists to be this high stakes and thrilling individual, and the casino allows them to do that. That is the main purpose of having a casino in your spy movie. Your hero gets the chance to really live large and proudly while in the background of your frames sits this enormous hunk of eye candy.

Drawing attention to the spy hero and the villain

Using a casino in a spy movie also allows the hero to fight through goons like security guards and drunk gamblers. It also allows a thrilling piece that comes into play when security is keeping a close eye on our protagonist adding tension in rising action to the film’s plot.

The casino is there to give your protagonist a modern day castle to infiltrate and your antagonist gets a “throne room” to reign from. Even television series’ such as Ozark love using casinos and other gaming industry set pieces for their filming. And for good reason too! They are so excellently characterized in these movies.

Early examples of casinos in the spy movie genre

The spy film genre like many began in the silent era of films, with the ever present paranoia of the Great War. These fears produced many classic films of that era including The German Spy Peril, a spy movie that centered around a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

In the year 1928, Filmmaker Fritz Lang made the milestone film Spies which contained so many tropes that have now became popular in much later spy dramas, including the idea of a secret headquarters, an agent that was known by a number, and the ever beautiful foreign agent who then comes to woo the hero. Lang’s now famous Dr. Mabuse films are from the period that also contained elements of modern spy thrillers, although the central character is just a criminal that was only interested in espionage for the profit. In addition, a few of Lang’s American movies, like Hangmen Also Die, deal with the concept of spies during the second world war. Which paved the way for casinos in movies.

Espionage was a well-established entity in the twentieth century. Advancements in wireless telegraphy and the telephone evolved in the early 20th century. In the 19th century, governments had agencies for espionage but espionage itself was at its fledgling stage. The American Civil War had well-known spies on both sides and European nations that were frequently at war had espionage operations that often worked within their diplomatic missions.

American Civil War

Elizabeth van Lew

Elizabeth van Lew, the granddaughter of abolitionist, Hilary Baker was not only a famous spy but ran a large spying organization that passed information to the Union Army. She helped imprisoned Union soldiers escape and gave them information about safe houses. Elizabeth also helped Union sympathizers enter the prison as prison staff to help soldiers escape. She learned about army strengths and troop movements from prisoners and passed information to the commanders of the Union armies. She ran an espionage organization called the Richmond Underground. Ulysses S Grant and General Sharpe, the commander of the Union Army greatly appreciated the expensive espionage efforts of Van Lew. The government gave her $ 15,000 for her efforts after the war and was appointed Post Master General of Richmond for eight years.

Rose O Neal Greenhow

Rose O Neal Greenhow was a staunch secessionist and an influential socialite who lived in Washington DC. She worked for the South though she lived in the North and earned the name, ‘Rebel Rose’. She gained important information from her social circles and passed it to General P.G.T Beauregard of the Confederate Army in the early months of the Civil War. The information she gave helped the Confederate army win the First Battle of Bull Run. She was discovered and imprisoned. She was sent on a diplomatic mission to Europe. Her task was to advocate the Confederate cause to Britain and France. She drowned on her return when her boat capsized while avoiding a gunboat belonging to the Union Army. Her body was recovered and she received a military funeral by the Confederate government.

Europe

Baron August Schluga

Baron August Schluga was a well-known German spy. He served in the Austrian army as an infantry officer and fought in Magenta and Solferino during the 2nd Italian War of Independence. The Baron sent information on the armies of Austria and Prussia to Berlin. He was known to the German Secret Service IIIb as Agent-17. Although he provided valuable information to his employers, he never divulged his sources. He used his connections as an army officer to obtain valuable documents from the Austrian army. He provided valuable information to the Germans during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and gave them a document that gave information on the deployment of French troops that helped them defeat the French during World War I.

Espionage began in the 1800s and grew to become a major source of information sharing in the twentieth century. Espionage was often the basis of the history-changing events that took place during wars. Well-known spies of the nineteenth century did commendable work and overcame many hurdles without the advancement of communication technology that was widely used for espionage during the twentieth century.

It’s well known that art imitates life. But that’s not where it ends. It also imitates what we desire from life, even if we’ll never attain it. One of the few genres where that’s more apparent than anywhere else? The fantastical world of James Bond.

If most people were honest, they would confess something to each other. They would describe a version of themselves that doesn’t exist outside of their fervent imagination, and probably never will. A more suave, debonair version of themselves. A real “women want him, men want to be him” type. But this better you isn’t just the biggest personality in the room. They’re also about to save the world, and look damn good doing it.

The complex backstory

Spies usually come from rough pasts and broken homes, but that’s just used to garner sympathy they’re too tough to need or want. In their prime, they’re handsome, chiseled machines that can fight like an MMA heavyweight superstar, and shoot like a Navy SEAL. As long as they haven’t gone rogue yet, and maybe even afterwards, they have access to things of which we could only dream: explosive devices, top-notch weaponry, convincing fake passports, cash, luxury cars.

Spies get to travel to exotic locations (where they probably know how to get by in the local language) and engage in missions where the outcome really matters. They inspire hope in the compatriots and strike fear into the hearts of their enemies.

Spies don’t break under torture

Unfortunately, one of the most fascinating aspects of spycraft is much less easily romanticized: torture. Some countries deny performing it, others revel in it, but most probably engage in it sooner or later. If a spy gets caught behind enemy lines, they’re probably not going to survive, let alone in one piece. But from the safety of our couches, we have nothing to lose if things go sideways. We have the luxury of wincing in sympathy as sharp bits are inserted where they don’t belong, and fragile parts are smashed with abandon.

Spies have 9 lives…

The story wouldn’t be complete in most cases if it ended there, so the spy usually finds a way to escape before they’ve become too disfigured. Later on, it’s time for the explosive crescendo of climactic action. Emphasis on explosives. There are a lot of times that explosions on the big screen are grossly exaggerated, but who cares? A spy thriller can be mostly accurate without being a science lesson.

The spy genre allows us to live vicariously through a dyed in the wool badass without any of the risk or responsibility. We travel the world, scoring one night stands and keeping the Russians or the Chinese at bay for another month. Bottles of comically expensive single malt, a high-stakes round of black jack, and an Aston Martin. The life of a rich person, but without either the grueling effort of earning it or the privilege and fortune of being born into it. The creativity is seemingly limitless, and all we are asked to do is enjoy it.

The world of spies, espionage and hidden wars has captivated people of all ages for decades, but there’s one name that stands out to everyone whether or not they seek out the stories…James Bond. But Bond wouldn’t exist without a typewriter and the mind of the author Ian Fleming. Fleming didn’t make James Bond out of thin air, he had the stories and experience to flesh out the now legend better than almost anyone else.

Background

Ian Fleming was born into a parliament member family in 1908 and was well taken care of, but his nature didn’t match with the upper class lifestyle. While he enjoyed writing, reading, and playing games, his academics were left by the wayside while he endured bullying. It wasn’t until the start of the Second World War that Flemings started to excel.

As Personal Assistant to Rear Admiral John Godfrey, Fleming helped develop plans to misinform Nazis, strengthen information networks, and even steal the Enigma Machine from a Nazi base for Alan Turing. His ideas led him to create the 30 Assult Unit, a team of special intelligent troops whose whole goal was to gather documents and information near the front lines from Nazi bases and soldiers. He started the assault unit in 1942, after coming off of command of “Operation GoldenEye.”

Writing

After retiring from the Royal Navy, Fleming was set to marry his pregnant fiance, Ann Charteris, which caused him significant stress. He coped by returning to his passion for writing. Creating a character based on his experience as an intelligence officer, and naming him after an American Ornithologist whose books Flemings had spent plenty of time with, James Bond had his first mission in “Casino Royale.”

Fleming’s first book had a hard time getting published, but through some persuasion, a UK company caved in. After its release, Casino Royale needed three prints just to meet the demands.

Though loosely based on Fleming’s experience, James Bond quickly had an entire world of his own. Bond was a commander in the Royal Navy Reserve, before joining the British Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6. Bond is also commonly referred to by his code number, 007. As time progressed in the real world, so did the adventures of Agent 007, from Fleming’s experience in World War II to his knowledge and understanding of the Cold War.

Although James Bond may have worked alone, he wasn’t without help. Throughout the books M, the Head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, gives Bond his assignments and briefings before missions. Over time M’s identity and secret are revealed, bringing them a level of humanity.

The legacy lives on

For most, James Bond is synonymous with amazing spy gear, courtesy of Q. While known in the modern movies, Q was never really part of Ian Fleming’s work. Q and Q Branch wear mentioned, but only in passing. Nevertheless, the nameless entity has played a pivotal role.

Ian Fleming died August 12, 1964. He was 56 and suffered a fatal heart attack. However, his legacy through Bond lives on. Whether you’re new to spy and espionage thrillers, or have loved them for years, it’s thanks to Ian Fleming that James Bond lives today.

Have you seen people who obtain information from people to tell certain parties? This act is known as espionage. Spies get confidential information. Understand that spies don’t have any permission when getting the information. Though it’s a dangerous act, it is one of the best ways to get information that is otherwise hard to get using diplomatic ways.

Espionage has existed for a long time, since the existence of society. Since it’s a wide scope, we will look at the historical modern spies starting from the 1960s onwards. The start of the 1960s was accompanied by great technological advancements. These advancements made an incredible change in the espionage field.

Most spy works are for the government and state agencies are responsible for such activities. In the USA for example, the FBI and CIA conduct spy tasks. However, there are independent individuals who government hire them if they don’t want to use agencies. But, modern espionage is mostly done by state agencies. The party involved in the spying depends on the nature of the task.

You can trace modern spies from the state of the Cold War. If you take the USA as an example, there are several USA spies in various countries such as Russia and China.

How Modern Spies Operate

The world is fast-changing and state agencies and institutes like spies are experiencing the same. Espionage operations are taking another dimension by the introduction of certain devices like computers. State spies are in two categories: agents and intelligence officers.

1. Agents

Agents are independent but they provide information to intelligence officers. They do their activities secretly. Though agents may not be professionals, they possess significant skills and operational prowess. Mostly they use their ideological and personal factors in their work.

2. Intelligence Officers

Governments mostly use intelligence officers to get information from individuals and other states. These officers work for intelligence agencies like the FBI and CIA. They possess quality espionage skills which help them to work in any condition.

They are free to disclose their identity, unlike agents. However, sometimes they work without identity disclosure. They cover deep and sometimes dangerous tasks.

Intelligence agencies recruit agents who gather information. The officers use different techniques as it’s the task. Modern agencies use the latest technology in their work like cellphones and eavesdrop.

3. Cyber Spying

Cyberspace is an essential feature of modern espionage. Spy agencies use the internet to get information from their targets. People use the internet daily and they leave a lot of important data on the internet. The most used platforms used in getting these data are social media.

The internet is incredibly helping spies and easing the operations than in the past.

Modern-Day Spies Target

Political and military data were the main target of traditional espionage. Tough they remain critical, the sector has widened and new targets are emerging. The world is now technology-driven making things better and state institutions increasing such as the introduction of the industrial sector.

Spies get the industrial secrets of their rivals and use them to their advantage. The information helps to make better innovations and inventions than others.

Though it’s a dangerous job to the agents, it is important as it helps to get confidential information. Modern spies use advanced methods that make the work easy.

If you are a keen reader of espionage literature you likely have come across Dr. Wesley Britton. He is an author, born and brought up in Pennsylvania to his southern parents. Dr Wesley Britton is a science fiction storyteller and writer. He started publishing his work in graduate school but has been writing fiction all his life that he can’t even remember when he started. Wesley tells his stories most uniquely and extraordinarily, something you’ve never seen or experienced before. Besides science fiction, he did several other non-fiction writings, as you’ll discover later from this article.

He earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in American literature from north Texas university, where he majored in 19th-century literature. Wesley Britton was an English teacher for over three decades, working for thirty-three years in Oklahoma. He then moved back to his hometown, Pennsylvania, and started teaching at Harrisburg Area Community College before he retired from teaching in 2016.

Wesley Britton is blind. For several years, he suffered from a genetic progressive eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. Progressive retinitis pigmentosa disease doesn’t render you blind at once; you gradually lose sight until it goes away completely. This can only mean that this author wasn’t born blind; this disease caught up with him from 1970 until 1996 where he lost his sight completely.

His Books

Wesley Britton is the brain behind these four excellent books; the Encyclopedia of TV spies is his most notable work, spy television, onscreen and undercover: the ultimate book of movie espionage and Beyond Bond: Spies in Fiction and Film.

• Spy Television

Spy television, released in 2003, is a tv spies entertainment book covering homemakers, trained professionals, comedians, business people, and criminals characters. All these characters portray glamorous, sexy, reflective, and campy sides. Wesley Britton takes his readers to the behind-the-scene happenings from when tv spies were just but anti-columnists to now that they are all loaded using gadgets to portray their dark motives.

• Beyond Bond: Spies in Fiction and Film

In this book, released in 2005, Britton talks about espionage history. In film and literature, he demonstrates what spies do to catch people’s attention and how they actualize it. Wesley Britton brings both fantasy and reality into this book. While reading beyond bond, you’ll realize how different devices and themes of this book continue to evolve in each decade, as per the political needs.

• Onscreen And Undercover: The Ultimate Book Of Movie Espionage

The onscreen and undercover book shows the spying history on large screens, covering both the beyond bond and spy television books. In melodramas, comedy, romance, thrillers, and political films, spying has been part and parcel of their production. The book shows how people live with spies in their midst, their fears, admirations, and what they’d like for their culture and the world overall to be.

• The Encyclopedia Of TV Spies

Contrary to his other three books above, the encyclopedia isn’t much of historical narration. This book analyses all the elements that the key shows used to get up there. It also narrates why some good productions didn’t have success after their release. This book is full of entertainment.

When Wesley Britton isn’t reading or writing, he plays his electronic drum. This takes him back to his youthful days beating drums in various bands in Texas.

During the first half 20th century, almost every nation prohibited women from joining the military. Except for the medical field, most females could not take an active part in warfare. Yet, there is a long history of women being involved in the deceptive world of espionage. Extensive documentation exists of women working undercover or involved in covert intelligence during World War I and World War II.
